easy on the eye: britain’s first female porn producer

Anna Span
Good Vibrations Magazine has published an excerpt from my book on new porn by women; in this case featuring the porn by Anna Span with her Easy on the Eye Productions ("British Humor in Anna Span's New Porn"). I devote an entire chapter to her work in my book so it's high time I shared some of my thoughts on her porn.

Since 2003, Anna has released 20 DVDs, each containing five episodes, most part of her “Anna Span’s Diary” series.

Distribution of porn was illegal in Great Britain until 2000 when the R-18 certificate was introduced for hardcore porn with 18 as the rating for softcore. Due to membership of the European Union, import of porn had already been legal, but not sale; the law was intended to clean up this awkward purchase- and sale situation.

Films rated R-18 are, however, only allowed as merchandise in stores with special license, and not via mail order or from the Internet that are only allowed distribution of the softcore versions. Anna signed an agreement with the female run sex shop Ann Summers, which has some select stores with the required license to sell R-18 rated DVDs, and she also found vendors in other countries. Because most of the economic profit is in distribution and direct sale, Anna has now set up an online shop on her site where she sells clips (as a way of getting around the law) from her DVDs. Most recently, she has produced porn primarily made available as video on demand (VOD) from servers outside Great Britain.

One of the things I like the most about Anna's porn is its use of humor: both as a means to capture chemistry between characters as they teasingly flirt and fool around, but also in the form of a more outrageous Benny Hill sort of humor. A combination of both kinds of humor often has winning results, as I discuss at Good Vibrations Magazine. Read the article there: "British Humor in Anna Span's New Porn."
